This month we collaborated with ECALA to put their land acknowledgement into visual form. Having an acknowledgement on the wall allows for constant recognition of territory and Treaty relationships. In addition to having a visual reminder, it is also important to open meetings and events with a land acknowledgement. In addition, we must consider why land acknowledgements are made, so that activities reflect an awareness of the Nation to Nation relationship we agree to have with Indigenous Nations we have entered into Treaty with. Every time we do something on the land, in these territories, our activities are linked in some way to how we got here, the history of this land and the Peoples on it. Our activities might be contributing to reconciliation and right relationship, or they might be building on a history and contemporary reality of colonialism and colonial violence. When we ask ourselves how our activities today play into either, and discuss this in a land acknowledgement, the statement becomes more than just a disclaimer or a box to check. It becomes an active process of respecting relationship and building awareness. It is then a decolonial activity, not just a token of reconciliation. How do our activities contribute to the relations we are building and maintaining on this land? Whose traditional territory is it? How are we honouring or giving back to them through our work to show our appreciation and respect for our Treaty relationship and presence here. |
